9 million Children Die every year from silent killers, such as, poverty, hunger, easily preventable diseases and illnesses, and other related causes

That is equivalent to:

· 1 child dying every 3.5 seconds

· 17-18 children dying every minute

· A 2004 Asian Tsunami occurring almost every 1.5 weeks

· An Iraq-scale death toll every 16–38 days

· Over 9 million children dying every year

· Some 70 million children dying between 2000 and 2007

Of the 9.2 million child deaths (under-5s) in 2007, the vast majority occurred in just two regions:

Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia accounted for 7.5 million child deaths in 2006.

Also of concern is that the global financial crisis, largely the making of rich countries, is affecting the poorest. Margaret Chan, director-general of the WHO, estimates between 200,000 and 400,000 additional children will die because of this global financial crisis.
